Musicians and Scientists

About

Einstein was a violinist, Elgar had a home chemistry lab, and many other people are active in music and science.
Both scientists and musicians work long and odd hours for little pay, and have very little chance at reaching the top of their respective fields. Why would anyone pursue either career, let alone both? Why even make one or the other a hobby on top of an already challenging job?

This blog follows my attempts at making a documentary about the many people who are active in both music and science.

My own background is more in science than in music, but I do both myself as well. I recently finished a PhD in Biochemistry, and I have been playing violin in community orchestras, student orchestras, and small ensembles since I was in high school. I’m also trying to teach myself guitar, and I have two science blogs: easternblot.net and Expression Patterns.

  1. You should interview Jim Friesen (of the Best Institute and/or Molecular and Medical Genetics). His jazz band was a regular at various SickKids events.

  2. Eva, have you heard of the Image Science Film Festival? They look for “narrative films with a scientific or technological theme and story line, or films that have a scientist, engineeer or mathematician as a leading character” and perhaps your project would fit. It might be too tight time-wise for this year’s festival but maybe in the future? Could be a venue for the eventual documentary :)

  3. I did hear of that! I’m not far enough done BY FAR to submit anything, and I got the impression that they were more interested in fiction (like LabLit, but movies) – although they did screen BLAST!, which is also a doc.
